Это надо смотреть config.log, причины могут быть разнообразны
(например, неподходящие опции этого самого компилятора или тест,
который на самом деле проверяет наличие какого-нибудь заголовка,
который его автор почему-то счёл более надёжно находящимся на
тестируемой системе, чем работающий компилятор).

Да, это попытка добавления -lmailutils мешала работе configure.
И что-то похожее вспоминается теперь, на каком-то пакете уже
нарывался при попытке убрать предупреждение "underlinked libraries"
таким образом.
