That's not at all a matter of "branch" or "pockets". Believe me or not,
you can simply place libraries under /lib/i686 or /lib/sse2, and they'll
be picked up automatically (as needed). Building glibc this way would
address 90% of the issue.
Also, I believe that speculations about i586 (vs i686 vs sse2-capable
CPUs) are greatly exaggerated. Usually there is something like 2%
a difference.
