А он и не сохраняется в истории.

Попробуй - полюбишь :)

Я вообще сделал мини-велосипед называется gearhsh, который создает
hasher workdir на tmpfs, а потом делает gear --commit --hasher -- hsh
~/tmp/hasher --lazy-cleanup

Единственный минус такого решения - текущие незакоммиченные изменения
нельзя посмотреть через git-diff, а только через git-diff HEAD

История при этом вполне себе остается clean. Эти временные конфиги не
попадают в бранч.

Кроме того git commit -a --amend никто не отменял. Мне жизнь облегчает.
