Я понимаю, это действительно удобно.
Но мантейнерам вряд ли будет интересно мучать программы, чтобы
они поддерживали разные версии, а также модули под разные версии
собирать.
Я бы предложил вводить 1.9. Кому надо для работы - захолдит 1.8.
Поддержку 1.6 для тестирования совместимости (оно же - задержка
развития, поскольку не стимулирует обновлять версии) можно
осуществлять только силами тех, кому это нужно, и в виде
ruby1.6, не пересекаясь с текущей версией.
P.S.
Кстати, искалки зависимостей при сборке, аналогичной питоновской,
у нас нет?
