А может действительно сделать перед запуском netscape
$ ulimit -v `grep ^MemTotal: </proc/meminfo |awk '{print $2}'`
(или что-то на эту тему)?

Иначе, если шкаф не перезагружать время от времени, получается довольно
низкая производительность системы.

На XFree 3.3.6 он сам время от времени "перезагружается" :)
