Subject: [ANNOUNCE] apt-get for RPM
List-Id: RPM Package Manager <rpm-list.redhat.com>
Hi
I'm glad to announce that the much appreciated Debian's
APT is now available for use in RPM based systems.
APT is a frontend for package management systems, such
as dpkg or rpm allowing easy package management with
automatic dependency resolution.
Features include:
- package download through ftp or http;
- package installation (dependencies will be automatically
resolved and downloaded);
- package removal;
- system upgrade, by checking what packages are outdated,
verifying any eventual new dependencies and installing
everything;
- mirror site authentication;
- et coetera.
So far, apt has only been tested in Conectiva's
distribution, but should work with few or no changes in any
distribution that uses the same directory structure
for packages as RedHat. Use in other distributions that use
rpm may require some minor hacking.
The latest release is available at:
ftp://ftp.conectiva.com/pub/conectiva/.0/EXPERIMENTAL/apt/
This release contains changes to apt's source code that may
make it unusable in Debian boxes, but that will change soon,
when I merge the rpm support to the aliencode branch of apt
in cvs. That should make the next major "official" release of
apt able to work in both deb and rpm based systems.

UNIX is user friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are.
