А мне кажется, что эту проблему нужно решить не поиском -adobe-helvetica-,
а прописыванием в /etc/gtkrc/gtkrc.utf8 (или gtkrc.ru_RU.koi8r, в
зависимости от локали) другого шрифта (который предварительно нужно
установить, хотя бы verdana), желательно от ms, или, как минимум,
прописывание его в ~/.gtkrc
Шрифты от ms можно установить, скачав и установив пакет ms-ttf
