Нашел..
Вот тут в конце есть ссылка на xcalc, причем с градиентом.. явно прописан

а вот тут уже говорится о XawXpm

Явно видно применение скинов, видимо нужна эта библиотека XawXpm, хотя по
ссылке на linuxfocus.org этого не говорится..
