Причину плохого отображения tahoma в gtk1 я все-таки вроде выяснил - во
время выставления шрифтов в программе SkyChart (кстати, появилась
linux-версия этой замечательной программы, знакомой почти каждому любителю
астрономии) в диалоге выборе шрифтов во время выбора tahoma в кодировке
iso10646-1 появилась предупредительное сообщение типа: "2-х битный шрифт,
возможно некорректное отображение".. И действительно, при выборе шрифта в
этой кодировке выглядело все так же - наезжали буквы друг на друга. При
выборе tahoma в koi8-r было все чудесно... ЧТо такое "2-х битный шрифт" -
не знаю..
Выходит, что gtk1 не поддерживает этого.. :( и нет никакого решения?.. Но
почему же verdana в iso10646-1 выглядит хорошо - не понимаю.. какие-то
разношерстные шрифты получаются..
И снова камень в огород utf8 в качестве системной кодировки...
