Попробуйте

xrdb -load /home/_юзер_/.Xdefaults

что касается задания шрифтов, то, не знаю как сейчас, но раньше шрифты для  
ical задавались не в виде имен семейств шрифтов, он не поддерживает xft..  
Неправильно, короче, у вас.. Вот мой ~/.Xdefaults, который не заточен  
специально под ical, но там есть общие настройки для шрифтов большинства  
подобных программ..

напомню, что при применении этих настроек файл читается снизу вверх, т.е.  
нижележащие настройки могут перекрывать те, что находятся в начале файла.

Запустив ical сейчас, я вижу ту же (по шрифтам) картинку, которую я тут  
прилагал ранее.
