Увы, gmane - бесплатный сервис, держится на энтузиазме и ингда, особенно
когда много нагрузки, тормозит.
Иногда письма проходят за пару минут, иногда минут за 20. Иногда gmane
падает на несколько дней - было пару раз.
Но это ж не чат, разве это так критично?
Лично для меня это перекрывается двумя удобствами:
1) я не должен получать все письма, а только те, которые мне интересны.
Проблемы "большого трафика" не существует.
2) Если я подключаюсь к уже существующему форуму, то я могу скачать все
сообщения. В случае maillist нужно как-нибудь вытаскивать письма через
web-интерфейс и как-то вставлять их в клиент. Лишние не формлаизуемые
телодвижения.
3) тот же пункт 2, но с другой стороны: если я читаю/пишу форум через
nntp с разных компьютеров или с разных OS на одном компьютере, мне не
нужно делать ничего, чтобы базы были одинаковыми.
Каждый выбирает.
