драйвера можно собрать модулем (наверное всегда).
Собираешь нужный драйвер, modprobe и вперед

Патч без исходников? xdelta что-ли :)
1) src.rpm разворачивается
2) в spec дописывается патч
3) ядро пересобирается
первые 2 действия 5 минут занимают.

Да, дописать правильный режим.
P.S. Только не стоит тебе пока ядра собирать.
Сначала надо читать, читать и читать...
Собрать нормальное ядро тяжело. В дистрибутиве уже люди постарались.
