По официальной информации, это сделано по настоянию Blizzard
(видите ли, слово FreeCraft очень созвучно словам Warcraft и
Starcraft). Что там на самом деле, думается, всплывет немного
позже.
Если честно, то мне такое поведение близзарда не совсем понятно.
Вон как сделали в id -- открыли исходники doom и quake. А
графику, звук и уровни (медиа) -- надо покупать. В результате
всем хорошо: и пользователям (не надо ради игры винду ставить) и
id (дополнительные продажи). Плюс к этому -- огромное количество
mod'ов, total и partial conversions и вообще дополнительных
карт.
