У меня в /etc/sysconfig/network ни пароля, ни логина для proxy. В четверке после
загрузки рабочего стола выскакивает авторизация proxy, а в пятерке нет и в аплете
погоды информируется, что к сети я не подключен. И где здесь копать?

Загляните в /etc/profile.d/proxy.sh -- мой alterator-proxy
писал туда.
