Скачал ISO образ дисрибутива Lite 4.0 - desktop-lite-20080121.iso
с объемом 706 Mb (при разворачивании ,видимо, еще больше).
На стандартную болванку 700Mb он не устанавливается, а болванки
750...800Mb уже давно исчезли из продажи.

Дык он вроде как на dvd и должен писаться, раз на CD не влезает.

Стандартными средствами ISO образ CD диска на болванку DVD не станет.
Образ - он образ и есть и рассчитан на организацию CD.
По-моему, так. Во всяком случае, после разворачивания пробовал
копировать на DVD. Вроде все нормально, но диск не загружается.
Вот если нормально развернете на CD и получите загружаемый
CD дистрибутив, потом его можно спокойно копировать на DVD.
