Не могу сказать про АЛЬТ Линукс, но вот пробовал Debian Squeeze,
стандартный с GNOME на ноутбуке 7-8 летней давности (Banias 1.3MHz,
1GB RAM, 32 Mb Video) - работает довольно шустро даже с Compiz.
