Да, дело оказалось в памяти, а не USB.
При ramdisk_size=20096 и меньше появляется окошко "Error loading
ramdisk", а при ramdisk_size=20097 и больше - уже описанный девятый
сигнал.
Спасибо за ответ; по крайней мере, стало ясно, куда копать, но вы бы
(альтлинуксовцы) написали на сайте - при 32Mb просто так не ставится
даже Junior в text mode.
p.s. win95 в свое время была скромнее ;)
