Рекомендацией использовать convmv. :-)
Мне эта рекомендация не очень подошла (по каким-то причинам у
меня она отказывалась перекодировать - то есть просто говорила, что
всё сделала нормально - но на самом деле всё оставалось как раньше).
Возможно, что дело было в большом количестве не только файлов, но и
каталогов, с 4-5-кратной вложенностью.
В результате варианты с find/xargs я тоже отложил из-за
навороченности (хотя до рабочего состояния довёл потом - просто
ради интереса) - и поступил простейшим способом: на этой же машине на
поднятой самбе поставил нужную кодировку, скопировал через smbmount
туда файлы, потом поставил другую кодировку, и достал файлы обратно.
