Уже несколько раз при дист-апгрейде выскакивало такое сообщение:
branding-altlinux-desktop error: unpacking of archive failed on file
/usr/share/gfxboot/desktop: cpio: stat failed - Too many levels of
symbolic links
Это можно поправить (и как?) вручную? Или дождаться официального
исправления?

Попробуйте:
apt-get remove design-bootloader-desktop
apt-get install branding-alt-desktop-bootloader
