Есть неплохая дока в пакете etherboot из Сизифа:
/usr/share/doc/etherboot-5.0.4/html/diskless.html.
В том-же пакете и бутромы компиленные есть.

Есть варианты прошивки bootrom'а во флеш материнской платы, неуверен насчет
любой материнки, но на некоторых работает. Название софта для этих целей
не вспомню, но суть в следующем: биос материнки представлен в виде архива в
котором лежат отдельные файлики, каждый из которых отвечает за свой кусок
железа. Я имел (сейчас где-то похерилась) прогу, умеющую дописывать в биосный
архив дополнительный файлы и помечать их, типа это заставочка (выводится при
старте биоса, обычно energy star), или это биос к сетевой плате, там есче куча
вариантов была, но нас интересует только возможность впихнуть биос сетевухи.
