Я сейчас решаю этот вопрос путём использования не интегрированных
настольных окружений, а обычных диспетчеров окон. Таких, как IceWM
или мой любимый Sawfish. Они хорошо автоматизируются и после недолгой
настройки превращаются в очень приличные рабочие места.
Флешка монтируется и отмонтируется кнопкой, которая есть у всех
пользователей на панели или горячей клавише.
А кнопка привязана к скрипту, написанному сто лет назад «на коленке»:
