Я просматривал версию 0.3 в декабре. Мне многое понравилось. Кроме
юникода в gst-player при неюникодном GNOME 1.4 :-)
Лично я вижу наибольшие перспективы именно у gstreamer.
Кстати, есть интересная статья "Putting together a complete multimedia
architecture for Unix", хотя там про IRIX больше
