Мне посоветовали не пользоваться глючным GDM. Когда я попытался удалить GDM, я получил предупреждение, что вместе с GDM будет уничтожен из системы и Synaptic, а как тогда манипулировать пакетами без него? Подскажите, как решить проблему, чтобы я мог удалить GDM, но продолжил пользоваться Synaptic или иным удобным GUI менеджером пакетов.

Сам пакет можно и оставить. В etc/sysconfig/desktop изменить
GNOME на WindowMaker - будет использоваться wdm
или AnotherLevel - будет xdm.
Сам пользуюсь wdm.
Предварительно нужно установить соответствующий пакет wdm или xdm.
