Как сказать. Коды, исправляющие ошибки, никто не отменял, и некоторые
компрессоры (RAR, в частности) кое-что по этой части поддерживает.

Скорее, в RAR'е есть интервальное кодирование, а в популярных
свободных компрессорах только Хаффман-сжатие (из-за американских
патентных заморочек). Иногда это приводит к заметной разнице в
коэффициенте сжатия.
