Мой личный опыт показал, что при установке Alt'ов под VMware Workstation
некоторые пакеты устанавливаются нештатно. Вероятно, вам не повезло и
возникла такая ситуация (если я правильно помню у меня это было).
Решение VMware Workstation 5 + AltLinux Мастер 2.4. Здесь проблемы
установки сохранились, но с правами все нормально.
Можно попробовать вариант с Virtual PC от MS.
