Я всегда обновлял ядро руками. Тут, в процессе чтения инструкции по
переходу с p5 на p6 решил установить update-kernel.
Установил, запустил. Он мне предложил
Try to install new kernel kernel-image-std-def-1:2.6.32-alt20.M50P.1 and
update its modules
При том, что у меня стоит
kernel-image-std-def-2.6.32-alt20.M50P.1
Хорошо, сказал я и вот что увидел:
kernel-image-std-def#1:2.6.32-alt20.M50P.1 is already the newest version.
Это нормально? Или надо что-то подкрутить, чтобы таких глупостей не
предлагал?

Скорее всего, сделали для обновления конкретных модулей на том же ядре (такое
бывает для VirtualBox, к примеру). Можно повешать баг на update-kernel с
просьбой упростить обновление в таком случае.
