Проверьте:
/etc/nsswitch.conf
hosts: files dns
В случае, если что-нибудь типа такого:
hosts: db files nisplus nis dns
были аналогичные проблемы.

ЗЫ Это конечно всмысле, ежели вы не используете db, nisplus и nis :)
