Думаю, это не для того случая. Я делал просто:
1) раскомпрессировал образ
gzip -d altlinux-4.1.0-desktop-i586-install-flash.img.gz
2) вставил флешку. По команде
dmesg
посмотрел - каким устройством она подхватилась (получилось sdb):
usb-storage: device found at 4
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Vendor: JetFlash Model: TS4GJFV10 Rev: 8.07
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
SCSI device sdb: 8011774 512-byte hdwr sectors (4102 MB)

3) Записал распакованный образ на флешку:
dd if=altlinux-4.1.0-desktop-i586-install-flash.img of=/dev/sdb
Писалось долго - несколько часов. Поскольку образ - 2-хгиговый, а флешка
- 4-х - получившийся диск виден как 2-хгиговый. Возможно, можно
переразбить fdisk'ом, но мне это пока не критично, поэтому не пробовал.
Загрузка и инсталляция прошли нормально.
