установил драйвер командой
# apt-get install /home/sihp1020-20050318-alt0.M40.1.
noarch.rpm , доустановил с DVD недостающие пакеты.
По окончании инсталяции принтер даже просигналил
включением протяжки. Но Laser Jet 1020в перечне не
появился, так что ALT Linux Control Centor воспользоваться
не могу. Что делать дальше?

Э... Я не понял - а ALT Linux Control Centеr тут при чем? Я настраивал
себе принтеры через kdebase-kdeprint - Центр управления KDE - Периферия
- Принтеры
