Только что попробовал в консоли запустить timidity -iA, а в noteedit в
настройках выбрать устройство MIDI, соответствующее timidity. Играет.

timidity падает или playmidi? Кстати, а playmidi разве не OSS'ное?
aplaymidi играет через порты timidity нормально.
