Зачем вам PHP? Тем более, что чтобы на нем
писать программы, а не решето из дыр и
квалификация должна быть довольно
высокая.
Посмотрите лучше в сторону Ruby и/или Python.
Hint: если надо получить краткий обзор
языка плюс какие-нибудь ссылки по нему, я
обычно заглядываю на http://ru.wikibooks.org
