1) то, что на firebird.sf.net более чем работоспособно, хоть и RPM не
совсем следует принятым в ALT правилам игры
2) была сборка Евгения Кобзева в соответствии с правилами ALT - где-то у
меня осталась
3) в свое время FB 1.5 CS на ALM 2.2 тянул у меня ~ 100 млн. записей в
одной таблице и управлялся с ними значительно лучше PostgreSQL (с MySQL
даже не сравниваю, т.к. он на этих объемах был неработоспособен). Но
страх перед возрастающими объемами и неудобство ручного фрагментирования
заставили меня, ругаясь и плюясь, переползать на Oracle. Тот тоже сейчас
тянет и тянет большие объемы, но процедура установки и настройки не
отличаются простотой и логичностью, см. например:

PS: конечно, с apt-get install firebird-cs-server было бы веселее жить,
так что в принципе вы правы
