А какие чипсет/видео? Если "порядка двухлетние", может быть
проще Compact 2.3; если "чуточку поновше" -- может потребоваться
Master 2.4 (DVD удобней); если ещё чуточку совсем bleeding edge
-- может потребоваться и бета 3.0, которого ещё нет, бишь 3.0rc.

Немного подождите, и берите ALT Linux Compact 3.0, когда его
доделают. Или прямо сейчас можно взять iso последнего RC:
