Device-mapper - набор патчей (а теперь включена в ядро) позволяющая
пользователю (читай администратору) нарезать любое block устройство на
другие block устройства ка к угодно..
Еще позволяет маппать одно блочное устройство в другое.
есть в документации пример, как нарезать устр. на 100 блоков и
записывать их в обратном порядке :-)
Используется в том числе и lvm/evms.
