Та же фигня.
Вылечил подняв под WMWARE 4.5 слакварь, поставить все, что вмварь 
считала нужным  и скопировав через дискету конфиг XF86config*.*
в свежезасетупленную машину с  Master 2.4

hi all

Кому удавалось завести X  от ALM2.4 внутри vmware (v5) поделитесь опытом. У 
меня X отваливаются, лог прилагается.
Кто виноват - версия XFree? кривой /etc/X11/XF86Config-4? Ну и наиболее 
вероятный вариант - Я?

Стыдно, конечно...
Как и предполагалось, виноват я. Иксам просто нечего было запускать. Сами то 
они были рабочие. Поставил kde все завелось. Потом посмеялся над собой, а 
затем поплакал. Надо же быть таки ослом :(

Да не переживайте, гораздо смешней бутать свежесобранное ядро и
понимать, что IDE осталось в модулях на диске (при этом не в
initrd), а взлетев со старым и запихав их в ядро -- оказаться
добитым тем, что драйвер root fs остался там же. :)

Хотя романтичнее оказалось когда-то потерять поддержку VGA
console -- оно-то грузилось и шуршало, да после "Loading linux..." 
вывод на экран отсутствовал :-)

Ну а про иксовые клиенты -- пускайте в таких случаях не startx
или service dm start, а xinit.  Он дёрнет xterm, который почти
(или совсем?) обязан быть.
