Дословно выполнил всё, что здесь сказано:

Но были грабли: нужен был ps2pdf. Выкинул из makefile, всё что с ним
было связано (доки к программе), тогда make и make install прошли. Могу
выслать свой make.
У меня подключен через USB.
Обратите внимание на строчку:
On Linux with USB connected printer:
If you are running Linux and the printer is connected via USB, you
can arrange for the firmware to be automatically downloaded to the
printer by performing one more installation step:
# make install-hotplug
Теперь прошивка сама загружается, когда надо.
У меня (Compact 2.3) полностью обновлена система из сизифа classic. В
частности стоит новый hotplug оттуда. Обновлять его отдельно с помощью
synaptic не советую - зависимости.
Напишите какой у Вас дистрибутив. Вместе мы заставим принтер работать.
Пишите о своих действиях и результатах.
