В секцию Screen - обязательно, что-то типа того:

Device "NVIDIA GeForce2 DDR (generic)"

Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "768x576"
ViewPort 0 0

Насколько я помню, по запускается с первым из указанных разрешений.
А в ~/.xawtvrc не помню, вроде бы там есть параметр fullscreen.
