версии 6.1 по сравнению с компактом сделано немало.

похоже что был. Да, кажется проблема была действительно в mesa -
вычислил, к какому пакету относится libGL и через rpm2cpio выдернул его
оттуда, после чего акселерация востановилась (после перезапуска x-ов,
конечно).
Все же очень жаль, что нельзя использовать "левый" openGL...
