Поскольку предстоит поставить ALT на несколько десктопов, мне не
кажется такой метод удачным, разбирать/собирать десяток корпусов не
удобно. Да и странно это делать для инсталла системы. "Софтовые"
решения - предпочтительние.
Однако, спасибо за совет.

Всё получилось с первой попытки. Формально это выглядело так:
переложил инсталляционный DVD из /dev/hdc в /dev/hdd.
