Про книжку ничего не скажу, а по поводу MySQL - с ним есть смысл
связываться только если Вам необходимо обрабатывать не очень большие
объемы данных с максимальной производительностью, причем логика
обработки очень проста. Т.е. свою задачу Вы, наверное, решите, но не
научитесь ничему более мощному.
Более серьезные открытые инструменты - PostgreSQL (очень большая
гибкость и функциональность) и FirebirdSQL (высокая производительность и
достаточная для меня гибкость). Книжки по ним на русском тоже есть.
