попробуйте поиграться с параметром -vo при запуске MPlayer.
Насколько я помню у меня получалось делать скриншоты, запуская так
mplayer -vo xv test.mpg
в этом случае изображения после нажатия на паузу не пропадало.
Также в mplayer есть возможность писать кадры в файлы формата
jpeg, опять же если мне память не изменяет %).
