ИМХО он намного проще и прозрачнее в настройке, чем KDE или
GNOME. После сборки внимательно изучи содержимое каталога
/usr/local/share/afterstep.
Особое внимание обратина файл /usr/local/share/afterstep/Wharf
и каталог приблизительно называемый /usr/local/share/afterstep/start.
Этого должно хватить. И еще: строчку вызова asetroot в файле
/usr/local/share/afterstep/autoexec я бы рекомендовал закомментировать.
Создаешь файл ~/.xinitrc следующего содержания:
xearth &
afterstep
И наслаждаешьься.

Как по габаритам, так и по потребляемым ресурсам все перечисленные
WM (IceWM, WindowMaker, AfterStep) приблизительно равны.
Выбирай, что больше нравится.
