Это как ботинки, лучший десктоп тот, который лично Вам удобнее,
и не слушайте чужих советов.
А сменить десктоп никогда не поздно, это как смена ботинок,
которые стали малы - вещь естественная и приятная, главное в
таком деле - своевременность.
Смотрите, выбирайте, настраивайте под себя.
P.S.
Да, кроме KDE и Gnome существует еще масса десктопов, так же
заслуживающих не меньшего внимания, чем эти двое.
