Документация не только в манах. Ищите еще в /usr/share/doc.
Поищите где у Вас файлы SANE размещены. Там много информации
в самих файлах.
Не думаю, что сборка от Альт тянет больше железа чем оригинал.

Версия дров может быть какая угодно. Если они сами по себе.
Читайте их доки, с чем и как их пользовать. И не нужно про
