Неоднократно проверено:
Грузимся в init 1 с подцепленным новым винтом, размечаем чо надо,
форматируем чо надо, после чего берем mc и гордо жмем F5 копируя
все чо надо куда надо. Занавес :-))
Ну далее надо запастись бутявой дискеткой (mkbootdisk) или
сидюком c дистрибутивом, перевесить новый винт в боевую позу,
загрузиться с сидюка или флопа и восстановить бутманагер, который
у Вас там стоял.
Все :-)
P.S. Все это происходит разумеется от root'а, ибо init 1 ;-)
