Почему?? 8-(_) Зачем Х для обновлений?? Для администрирования
системы Х вообще не нужен, это чисто юзерская приблуда.
# apt-get update
# apt-get install <имя пакета>
ну и для лакировки и контроля
# ftp altlinux.ru
# rpm
# purp
и это все, что нужно для полного счастья :-))

При инстолле работал SVGA сервер. Установите его, это пакет
XFree86-SVGA-3.3.6-ipl21mdk.i586.rpm по идее он должен работать
всегда, если все же не заработает -
XFree86-VGA16-3.3.6-ipl21mdk.i586.rpm Вас наверняка спасет.
Все это есть на первом сидюке дистра.
Ставится:
rpm -ivh
/mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/XFree86-VGA16-3.3.6-ipl21mdk.i586.rpm
или проще
urpmi -av XFree86-VGA16
skip.
