Нет, Вы не поняли. kxkb и gkb _абсолютно_ непригодны для обычной работы в анло-русском режиме. Это переключатели
_раскладок_. Они нужны именно для ввода многоязычных текстов и только.
А вот xxkb -- переключатель _групп_.
