Значит так, диск создаю следующим образом:
1. Форматаю дискетку fdformat-ом;
2. Создаю файловую систему mke2fs;
3. Запускаю mkbootdisk --device /dev/fd0 2.4.7
На счет других дискет - бутиться без проблем :)

Первые 2 телодвижения абсолютно лишние.
команда должна выглядеть так:
$ mkbootdisk --device=/dev/fd0 2.4.7-alt4-up
а если текущее ядро сбрасываем то
$ mkbootdisk --device=/dev/fd0 `uname -r`
Наберите mkbootdisk без параметров и увидите _правильную_ строчку
для примера :-))
Вы так и не сказали сто у Вас в /boot находится. Настоятельно
прошу выслать вывод команды:
ls -al /boot
