Это баг в инитскриптах (или feature :), я об этом уже писал что в FAQ
надо, но пока что-то не вижу там этого: aumix действительно по умолчанию
считывает установки микшера из /etc/aumixrc, но сервис sound загружает
их из /etc/.aumixrc, см. /etc/init.d/sound. Проверьте еще раз что
/etc/.aumixrc (с точкой!) есть и что он разрешен на чтение всем, а не
только root. Если в /etc есть еще и aumixrc (без точки) -- прибейте его.
Впредь запускайте aumix с явным указанием файла конфигурации (с
точкой!):
aumix -f /etc/.aumixrc
