Ну, либо настройте на своей машине proxy (можно использовать apache в таком качестве), либо сделайте gateway. В spring 2001 для этого даже какая-то конфигурялка есть.

А вы ping на host-машину отправьте. Если не доходит, то вы плохо настроили сеть. Сначала добейтесь стабильного пинга между хостом (Линуксом) и vmware. А вы пытаетесь зайти на localhost.localdomain, о котором vmware-win98 ничего не знает. Посмотрите, какую сеть создала для вас vmware (может быть, даже 192.168.0.*) и тогда хост-машина будет 192.168.0.1

Я налаживал. И даже linux под w2k налаживал. Все работает как если бы это были раздельные машины.
